Books: Yay or Nay?

Nook

In this day & age there’s apps for almost everything. And yes, that does include the Amazon Kindle app where you can buy books & download them on your device. Amazon sells Kindles & Barnes & Noble sell Nooks. Being a former Barnes & Noble employee the nooks can range from a small black & white e-reader where you use it strictly for reading to more advanced e-readers where you can download reading material to streaming Netflix. Technology continues to advance at a staggering rate. “Americans bought 751,729,000 books in 2010. Excepting 2008 and 2009 where sales reached 757 million & 777 million, respectively, that’s many millions more books sold than in any other year Bookscan has recorded.” With the risk of coming off weird, I find that tidbit of information comforting. In this rapidly advancing technological age I find it’s great that people are still buying the printed word. Myself included. I’ve had a Nook & where I found that downloading sample chapters in books that I was interested in was useful nothing beats a physical book in your hand.

“Their findings provide proof that not only books are very much alive, but that reading is exceptionally good shape & that the book publishing industry, while undergoing some significant changes, is, on the whole, in good health.” I think that this quote perfectly sums up the future of publishing & books. While e-readers continue to be the preferred mode of reading for some it’s nice to know that the printed word (books) are still being bought.

Books have had a huge impact in my life. I was a shy kid growing up & books were a source of comfort for me. I used to go to the library a couple times a week & I always had my nose in a book. To this day, I’m still an avid reader but due to being a full-time student while also working a part-time job it’s hard to find the time to sit down & enjoy a good book. I love just going into bookstores and perusing, especially used bookstores. Tin Can Mailman located near the Arcata Plaza is the best! I have many favorite books but if I was asked to name two I would say The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath & The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I tend to favor fantasy books but I’m open to reading all kinds. It just has to be interesting & well written.  In high school I used to read cheesy romance novels. Now I gravitate towards classic & fantasy novels. But a good book is a good book. 🙂

  1. Your post was interesting, and actually caused me to do a little bit of research. I wanted to know whether or not e-readers actually cause eye problems, and according to this article http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/12/do-e-readers-cause-eye-strain/?_r=0 there really isn’t much evidence that they do. In fact, e-readers may actually be better for your eyes than certain types of paper. I’m glad that the printed word is still alive, and that there are a variety of ways to consume literature, and I still read actual books sometimes, but I love my Kindle.

  2. I really liked your post and your perspective as someone who worked for Barnes and Noble makes it especially interesting because you have more knowledge of the product than just a casual user of e-readers. I can definitely relate to having books as a source of comfort because I did the same thing.

    Great post!
